Weight Loss Tips: Surprising Reasons You’re Not Losing Weight

We know that inadequate exercise and unhealthy eating habits are the main reasons why we are not losing weight, but could there be more surprising reasons for this struggle? Each year more medical researchers have discovered a variety of new reasons why weight loss does not happen for many people and in this article, you’ll see some of them.

1. Not Getting Enough Sleep

We don’t usually associate a lack of sleep with weight gain but in fact not getting enough sleep can be a factor in how much weight we lose. The main reason is because when you sleep less, you’re more likely to make bad choices regarding your diet and you’re not too motivated to exercise. When you’re overtired you start to crave foods that make you feel good and some of those foods are not healthy. A study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition noted that those who lacked adequate sleep are more likely to eat high-calorie meals or snacks.

2. Undereating Sometimes Causes Weight Gain

Did you know that undereating could cause weight gain? This is because it is possible to eat too little food during the day and to eat at the wrong times of the day. You should eat small healthy meals every few hours during the day, and you should stop eating at least two to three hours before going to sleep at night. If you love carbs but trying to lose weight, save them for right before you work out.

3. Consider the Medications You Take

Depending on which medications you take, they might be the reason you gain weight. Some examples of medicines that interfere with weight loss include antihistamines, antidepressants, and certain diabetes medicines. If you’re not happy with the side effects and the medication is not necessary, consider going off of the medication.

4. Going for Snacks In Place of Cigarettes

You might think that former smokers would not be at risk for gaining extra weight. But the opposite is true. When someone stops smoking, the lack of nicotine in the body leads to a decrease in metabolism, and this means that the former smoker will look for snacks to get his metabolism going again. Former smokers can combat the weight gain by exercising more and eating healthier foods.

5. Lack of Protein in Your Diet

So you’re a vegetarian and you believe that this way of life promotes weight loss. But vegetarianism does have some drawbacks, and one of them is not getting enough protein. You can combat this by eating plant based foods that are high in protein such as legumes, nuts, oatmeal, quinoa, certain fruits and vegetables and whole grain bread.

6. Dehydration

Our bodies consist mainly of water and when you are dehydrated, it might cause prolonged weight gain. You should drink at least 8 cups of water daily and flavor it with lemon juice and honey.

7. The Majority of Your Calories Come from Sodas and Other Beverages

Mindless eating often leads to weight gain, but you should also be mindful of what you drink because soft drinks, wine, and even beer contain empty calories that cause you to gain more weight. Your best bet is to drink more water and natural fruit juices without the added sugars.

Tips on Losing Weight

Just as there are surprising ways that weight gain occurs, there are some surprising ways to lose the weight. Don’t avoid all fats altogether when eating because some fats are good for you. The monosaturated fats in avocados help you boost good cholesterol in the body and they reduce stomach fat. It also helps to chew your food slowly. You don’t have to join a gym or do hours of aerobics at home to lose weight.

Even if you’re walking a few blocks every day, this all adds up to burning extra calories each week. It also helps to have an accountability partner with you to assist with meeting your weight loss goals and to keep you motivated.
