Maria Sofia Love is an online star who had become popular on the net because of the catchy taglines on the videos that she has been doing. She has actually earned quite a number of fans because of the said videos.
But the latest video she had released made most of her fans along with other netizens, to be really upset and irritated. She got a lot of condemnation because of this. It was a video which showed her performing compromising gestures with the national anthem on the background.
Many people were deeply disappointed
In the video, Sofia was seen wearing a one piece red bikini as she performs the dance steps she had choreographed for herself. The said video put the national anthem in bad taste as Sofia held her crotch instead of placing it over her heart. The camera was also focused on her private parts.
The NHCP (National Historical Commission of the Philippines) took this act seriously and considered this as an act of disrespect for the Philippine National Anthem. They have recently filed a petition for the termination of Maria Sofia Love’s Philippine passport.
The NHCP explained in the said petition that Love had violated R.A. 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines. This states that the national anthem, flag along with other national symbols should be treated with respect and reverence at all times.
According to the NHCP Chief of Heraldry Section, Teodoro Atienza, “The national anthem should only be played every time there is a ceremony or activity anywhere.”
According to the Section 38 of this law.
“As a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the Philippine flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the band or the conductor. At the first note, all persons shall execute a salute by placing their right palms over their left chests. Those in military, scouting, citizen’s military training and security guard uniforms shall give the salute prescribed by their regulations. The salute shall be completed upon the last note of the anthem.
The anthem shall not be played and sung for mere recreation, amusement or entertainment purposes except on the following occasions:
- International competitions where the Philippines is the host or has a representative;
- Local competitions;
- During “signing off” and “signing on” of radio broadcasting and television stations;
- Before the initial and last screening of films or before the opening of theater performances; and
- Other occasions as may be allowed by the Institute.”
Anyone who is found guilty of going against RA 8491 may be punished by 1year imprisonment and/or pay a fine of Php5,000.00 to Php20,000.00.
The NHCP also asked Senator Alan Peter Cayetano to assist them in determining the true identity of Love. It was presumed that Maria Sofia Love was just an alias. Based on the profile of Sophia, she lives in LA, California.
