The sudden death of University of Santo Tomas Law School freshman Horacio “Atio” Castillo III shocked not just his relatives and friends but even those who are not related to him. The hazing victim is being mourned by thousands and the cry against hazing is again awakened.
Gerardo M. Castillo, the victim’s uncle, shared a heartbreaking photo of Atio’s dog looking at his coffin. The Facebook post shared in the afternoon of September 21 has over 27,000 reactions and was shared over 7,000 times as of this writing.
He shared on his post how Atio’s dog Lega misses him so bad, and that she goes to his room and wonder why he has not come home yet. But Gerardo believes that Lega knows something has gone wrong. On his post, he also swears that he will bring justice for the death of his nephew.
His whole post says “My dearest Atio Lega misses you so bad that she wants to kiss you but she cannot comprehend why you are no longer with her. I see Lega and it seems she sees you still and really cries at night. Do you know Atio she goes to your room and wonders why you have not come home yet but I know she knows something must have gone wrong. I swear I’ll bring you justice Atio but the sad part you are gone and how I wish I should have just be the one because you have such a great future ahead of you. I love you Atio and same with Lega. Till we meet again. Say hello for me to lolo and tell your grandfather how I miss him terribly still and no words can describe such feeling.”
According to a report in Rappler.com, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) chairperson Patricia Licuanan, who faced the Senate Finance Committee on September 21, said that CHED-NCR will look into this “very tragic event”.
Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri asked about CHED’s stand on this controversial death to which the chairperson responded: “First of all, let me just say that we condemn this act very strongly.”
