The Marathon Queen
Mary Joy Tabal, known as the “Marathon Queen” of the Philippines gave the country a reason to be happy about after the bad and sad news happening. Tabal earned the first gold medal for the country last 2017 Southeast Asian Games after she gave a dominant performance in the women’s marathon last Saturday at the Palace of Justice.
Performance Even at the Beginning
Tabal set the pace right, even after the opening gun. She steadily built a huge lead over the other competitors.
The Marathon Queen is a Rio Olympian and was ahead of two of the most competitive players: Hoang Thi Thanh of Vietnam who finished 2:55:43 and Natthaya T of Thailand who finished 2:58:17. She finished with a time of 2:48:26.
Worth the Game
Tabal settled for the silver medal two years ago after competing in Singapore. She said she was nervous at the beginning. However, her intense training was on her mind while running.
The Cebuana native also revealed that she wants to show all the Filipino that we can achieve our goals.
Tabal, who was in tears during her triumph, was hoping to give a performance that will fire up the rest of the Filipino athletes who will be in the tournament.
Successful Sea Games
After the victory of Tabal, the Philippines now have 1 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronzes.
The four-time PBA MVP Mon Fernandez, who is now with the Philippine Sports Commission, enveloped Tabal with a tight hug after her triumph with the women’s marathon. He expressed his hope that other athletes can take the Cebuana’s achievement to their hearts.
For the former PBA player, Tabal is an inspiration for other Filipino athletes. She showed that her size is not an issue in giving a great performance.
“I hope the other athletes will find inspiration from that,” said Fernandez.
