One of the Most Controversial People Today
President Rodrigo Duterte is one of the most popular and talked about President not only in the Philippines but also from around the world. A lot of Filipinos voted for him because of his plans and actions against illegal drugs, corruption, and crimes.
However, Filipinos now are divided when it comes to the leadership and system of President Duterte. Some are in favor of his methods while others are not.
The Controversial Artwork by Mideo Cruz
A Filipino artist named Mideo Cruz, one of the supporters of President Duterte, used him as a subject for his paintings. This artwork has been circulating online not just because of its near perfection portrayal of the president but also because of its subject. It’s now being criticized by some netizens.
Cruz’ painting of the President is a replica of the “Sacred Heart of Jesus.” However, instead of Jesus, the face was replaced by President Duterte’s face. Instead of a heart, he is holding a gun in his left hand.
This artwork drew a lot of criticisms and negative feedbacks because the artist used the image of Jesus Christ.
Not the First Time
This is not the first time for Cruz to be the center of criticism and backlash. He also appeared before the Ombudsman in 2011 for using Jesus Christ for his exhibit. However, the case was dismissed in 2013, as reported by Inquirer.
The Philippines is a religious country and using Jesus Christ, God, Mama Mary, and other saints and biblical characters are considered sensitive.
