- Taxi fares in PH to increase to be at par with Uber
- LTFRB has agreed to increase the taxi fares
This is good news for the taxi drivers and operators and definitely bad news for commuters. The LTFRB has agreed unanimously on the increase of taxi fares. The increase will make them at par with the rates the Uber, according to Chairman Martin Delgra III.
“We will try to make it at par with TNVS (transport network vehicle services) or more particularly with the Uber system”, Chairman Delgra said on Wednesday.
He further said that the rates will also be based on the running time in addition to the rates based on the distance traveled.
The rate of Uber is based not only on distance but on the duration of the ride too. It states in the application that, “traffic, weather or any factors that extend the distance or duration of the ride can contribute to a difference between the estimated and actual fare.”
According to Delgra, the LTFRB had conducted a dialogue with the taxi operators 2 weeks ago and the decision will be released by the end of September. He said that this move would solve the under utilization of taxis
The flag down rate is still Php40 but the waiting time for every two minutes and running fare for every three hundred meters will be Php5.50. That will be an increase of Php2.00.
They believe that an increase in taxi fares will change the bad attitudes of taxi drivers. Bong Suntay, Philippine National Taxi Operators Association said that an increase on fare will encourage the taxi drivers to behave well on their passengers.
Meanwhile, the proposed memorandum that raised penalties for erring PUV drivers will go hand in hand with the taxi fare increase, according to the LTFRB. The said memorandum aims to suspend the license of the drivers of public utility vehicle for three months on their first offense.
Chairman Delgra of the LTFRB told commuters to be assertive of their rights as passengers. When riding a cab, they should not ask anymore if the driver is willing to take them to their destination.
