The operator of 5,300 KFC food chains, Yum China Holdings, started this feature of paying through facial recognition in KPRO, a concept store in Hangzhou which features menus with low calorie.

This new payment feature was done through a tie up with China’s largest mobile wallet app, Alipay. This tie up marked the ongoing digitalization of the fast-food chain to pull 2 trends. One is to resonate with the diners who are tech-savvy and another one is to jump on healthy eating bandwagon.

This manner of paying the diner’s bill with their faces is done by comparing the customer’s face with their photo on their accounts at Alipay. There is a control terminal that validates the photos each time the customer pays. This technology was introduced during a technology conference in Germany in 2015 by Jack Ma of Alibaba. He dubbed it as “smile to pay”.

The new system will soon be introduced in other retail outlets in China aside from KFC according to Ant Financial, the financial services spinoff of Alibaba, the e-commerce giant.

“We hope one day in the future people can go out without their cell phones or wallets.” thus said Dong Liyun via CNN.

So, for the tech-savvy diners who just happened to drop by their favorite fast-food chain, this will be welcomed with such delight. Source: Grubstreet
