On Tuesday, November 21, 2017, parts of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia were drenched by heavy rains, causing high-chest floods, standstill traffic and drowned cars.
Hundreds of people were affected, several reported injured and two died from electrocution.
In the misery of this disaster created by torrential rains, a hero has emerged.
Meet David Balendo, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), who has earned the respect of many netizens for braving the murky flood waters to rescue an elderly man trapped inside a submerged vehicle.
In this video that has gone viral in social media, you will see a Saudi man seeking help as the flood waters rise swiftly.
And although there were Civil Defense Officers in the area, they don’t seem to know what to do.
One of the rescuers even tried to throw a life vest towards the car but the panicking man couldn’t go near enough to reach it.
This is when David decided to help out.
He jumped into the choppy waters, swam towards the man and carried him like a child to safe ground.
In an interview, he said, “I could not stand seeing a man facing imminent danger and do nothing about it. I knew I had to jump and brave the floods in order to save Baba (an affectionate word to refer to an elderly man).”
Netizens honored this heroic act on social media while Saudi Arabia’s Interior Minister ordered an investigation to hold their rescue team to account.
