Have There Been Confirmed Hantavirus Cases in the Philippines?

As public attention turns to hantavirus following recent international reports, one question has emerged among Filipinos: Has hantavirus ever been confirmed in the Philippines?

Have There Been Confirmed Hantavirus Cases in the Philippines?

According to the Philippine Department of Health (DOH), there are currently no recorded or laboratory-confirmed hantavirus cases in the Philippines. Health officials have stated that the country has no recorded cases so far, even as authorities continue to monitor potential exposures linked to international outbreaks.

That said, understanding hantavirus remains important—especially in a tropical country where human exposure to rodents is common.

What Is Hantavirus?

Table of Contents

Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses carried primarily by rodents. Different hantavirus species are associated with distinct rodent hosts worldwide.

In humans, hantavirus can cause severe illness affecting either:

  • the lungs, or
  • the kidneys and blood vessels

These infections can progress rapidly and may become life-threatening without prompt medical care.

Types of Hantavirus Disease

There are two major clinical syndromes caused by hantaviruses:

1. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) / Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS)

More common in the Americas, HPS primarily attacks the lungs and heart.

Common virus strains include:

  • Sin Nombre virus
  • Andes virus

Symptoms can rapidly progress to severe respiratory failure.

2. Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS)

More common in Asia and Europe, HFRS mainly affects:

  • kidneys
  • blood vessels
  • clotting mechanisms

Common strains include:

  • Hantaan virus
  • Seoul virus
  • Puumala virus

This form may cause bleeding complications and kidney failure.

What Are the Symptoms?

Symptoms usually appear within 1 to 8 weeks after exposure.

Early symptoms

  • fever
  • fatigue
  • muscle aches
  • headache
  • chills
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • abdominal pain
  • diarrhea

Later symptoms (especially in HPS)

  • dry cough
  • chest tightness
  • shortness of breath
  • fluid buildup in the lungs
  • shock

Later symptoms (especially in HFRS)

  • low blood pressure
  • abnormal bleeding
  • reduced urine output
  • kidney failure

The illness may worsen quickly after the initial flu-like phase.

Can Hantavirus Spread From Person to Person?

In most cases, no.

Most hantavirus infections are not transmitted between humans.

However, there is one important exception: the Andes virus, which has been shown to spread from person to person in rare cases, usually among close household or intimate contacts.

Even then, human transmission is considered uncommon.

How Is Hantavirus Usually Transmitted?

Hantavirus is most commonly spread from infected rodents to humans.

People may become infected by:

  • breathing in virus particles from dried rodent urine, droppings, or nesting material
  • touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth
  • exposure through cuts in the skin
  • rodent bites, though this is less common
  • Consuming contaminated food in rare cases

Activities associated with exposure include:

  • cleaning abandoned rooms or storage areas
  • sweeping rodent-infested spaces
  • handling rodent nests
  • farming or camping in rodent habitats

How Fatal Is Hantavirus?

Hantavirus can be highly dangerous.

HPS mortality

About 38 percent of patients who develop the pulmonary form may die.

HFRS mortality

Mortality varies by strain:

  • milder strains: less than 1 percent
  • severe strains: up to 15 percent or higher

Some severe outbreaks involving the Andes virus have shown fatality rates approaching 35 to 40 percent.

Early recognition and hospital treatment significantly improve survival.

Is There a Cure? What Treatments Are Available?

At present, there is no specific cure or universally approved antiviral treatment for hantavirus.

Treatment focuses on supportive care, which may include:

  • oxygen therapy
  • intravenous fluids
  • intensive care monitoring
  • Mechanical ventilation for respiratory failure
  • dialysis if kidney failure develops
  • blood pressure support

For some HFRS cases, the antiviral drug ribavirin has shown benefit in certain clinical settings, though it is not considered a universal cure.

Should Filipinos Be Concerned?

At present, the risk appears low.

The Philippine Department of Health says no confirmed hantavirus cases have been recorded locally.

Still, because hantavirus is linked to rodents, basic prevention remains important:

  • seal holes where rodents may enter homes
  • Store food properly
  • Avoid sweeping dried rodent droppings directly
  • Disinfect contaminated areas before cleaning
  • Wear gloves and masks when cleaning rodent-infested spaces

Rodent control remains the best defense against hantavirus worldwide.
