Manila, Philippines – Fast food will always be a part of any Filipino’s life, regardless of the person’s food preference. There are numerous fast food restaurants in the country, but one name stands out among the rest, and that is the homegrown brand Jollibee.
Jollibee started out as an ice cream parlor in Cubao, Quezon City, back in 1975, and they slowly started serving other food items such as sandwiches. When the hot foods and sandwiches started to make more money than the ice cream, the store was then converted to a fast food restaurant and was renamed to “Jollibee.” The brand grew in popularity, and they now have over 1,300 branches, with more than 200 of them found outside the country, and they have recently opened one in Canada.
One of the food items that Jollibee offers is the Champ. It is a burger made with a 1/3 pound burger patty and garnished with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. It has been a part of their menu ever since 1984, but that will be changing soon.
In an announcement through a Tweet, Jollibee said that they will be phasing out the Champ soon in all of their branches. They’ve also mentioned that they are “working on big and exciting things this year,” hinting of possibly a new product coming out soon.
They have also said that one can still avail of the double patty Yumburgers if you would want to have your fill of burger, and you can get it in either Regular, Cheesy, or Cheesy Deluxe.
Finally they’ve also said all of their products are reviewed so that they can ensure that all customer expectations are met, and so it is possible that classic food items, including the Champ, may come back again.
Netizens have mixed reactions with this announcement. Some have been big fans of the Champ and are hoping that they won’t continue with phasing it out, while some are looking forward to what Jollibee can offer afterwards.
In effect, the Big Burger Steak meal may become phased out as well as they are using the same patty as the Champ.
