Filipina-American singer Sophia Laforteza, the leader of global girl group KATSEYE, is temporarily stepping away from the group’s promotional activities to prioritize her mental health and overall well-being.

HYBE and Geffen Records announced Sophia’s hiatus on August 7, saying that the 23-year-old singer has been receiving support and, following consultations with medical professionals, was advised to take an extended period of rest and ongoing care. Her condition is expected to be reassessed in September.

The announcement comes at a particularly busy moment for KATSEYE. The group released its new EP, WILD, on August 14 and is preparing for its upcoming WILDWORLD Tour. Sophia will not participate in the group’s promotional activities while she focuses on her recovery.

Sophia also addressed fans about her decision, acknowledging that stepping away from performing was not easy.

The singer shared that she loves performing and being with her members but has come to understand that taking care of her mind and body is necessary if she wants to continue doing what she loves for the long term. She also expressed her determination to rest, recover properly and return stronger.

Her message resonated with fans, particularly as the decision came during an important period in KATSEYE’s rapidly growing career.

Rather than treating the hiatus simply as an interruption to the group’s schedule, the announcement highlights the growing importance of mental health and sustainable working conditions in the entertainment industry.

KATSEYE Continues as a Four-Member Group

With Sophia temporarily away, KATSEYE is currently continuing activities with Lara Raj, Daniela Avanzini, Megan Skiendiel, and Yoonchae Jeong.

The group recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where the members performed their new single “Animal.” During the appearance, the group also addressed the absence of Sophia and fellow member Manon Bannerman, expressing their love and support for both members.

Manon has been on hiatus since February 2026, when she also stepped away to focus on her health and well-being. Sophia’s decision therefore marks the second time this year that KATSEYE has had to continue group activities without one of its members.

Despite the changes, the remaining members have continued promoting KATSEYE’s latest music and have emphasized their support for Sophia and Manon.

A Major Moment for KATSEYE

Sophia’s hiatus comes as KATSEYE enters another significant chapter in its career.

Formed through HYBE and Geffen Records’ global audition project The Debut: Dream Academy, KATSEYE has quickly established itself as one of the most prominent global girl groups to emerge from the project. The group combines K-pop-style training and performance with Western pop influences and has built an international fanbase known as the Eyekons.

The group’s latest EP, WILD, arrived on August 14. The project includes “Animal,” a track co-written by Ed Sheeran, Omer Fedi, and Blake Slatkin. KATSEYE performed the song on The Tonight Show ahead of the EP’s release.

The group is also scheduled to begin its WILDWORLD Tour in Dublin on September 1, followed by dates across Europe and North America. Whether Sophia will be able to rejoin the group for the tour will depend on her recovery and the September reassessment.

A Reminder That Rest Is Part of the Journey

For Sophia, taking a break does not mean giving up on her career. Instead, it represents a decision to protect her well-being while she continues pursuing a demanding profession.

For young performers navigating international fame, packed schedules, and constant public attention, taking time to recover can be just as important as preparing for the next performance.

Sophia’s decision also sends a meaningful message to her Filipino fans and KATSEYE supporters around the world: success does not have to come at the expense of personal well-being.

For now, Sophia’s priority is rest and recovery. KATSEYE will continue its activities, while fans wait patiently for the group’s leader to return when she is ready.

As the group moves into its WILD era, one thing remains clear—Sophia’s health comes first, and her members and fans are standing behind her.
