That method can work according to a grocery store in Vancouver that has designed embarrassing Plastic bags to remind you to carry their reusable bag.
The supermarket wants you to lug your grocery in a plastic bag printed “Into The Weird Adult Video Emporium” or “The Colon Care Co-op,” so that you never leave their branded reusable ones at home next time.
Supermarkets worldwide are trying to cut down the use of plastic bags, but it seems even slapping a fee on them is not enough to stop people from using them, so perhaps public shame might do the trick.
The supermarket, East West Market, hope this hoax can help curb the usage of plastic bags. The embarrassing messages are printed in large, bold letters to ensure they are not missed. This will then encourage shoppers to remember to carry their own reusable bags from home, in a bid to curb plastic pollution.
The owner of East West Market David Lee Kwen explained the reasoning behind these embarrassing bags:
“The message is, we should make a conscious effort to save our planet one step at a time, plastic bags are a big problem, and every step helps.”
Vancouver city has not implemented a complete ban on single-use plastic bags, unlike other regions and cities like Victoria.
The plan by East West Supermarket seems to be complying with Vancouver’s Single-Use Item Reduction Strategy, which requires businesses to come up with their own methods of clamping down on the use of plastic bags.
In addition to the humiliating slogans, the supermarket is also charging additionally five cents each, thus customers will have to incur a cost walking around with a bag with a message, “Wart Ointment Wholesale.”
It appears that the aim of the East-West Market to create awareness has succeeded, with the bags going viral on the internet.
