Manila, Philippines — Senator Imee Marcos believed that President Rodrigo Duterte does not commit any impeachable offense as she dismissed any impeachment bid to the president.
In an interview with the media on Monday at Senate, Marcos said the planned impeachment of critics of the government to the president is just a distraction.
“Ay pasabog lang yang impeachment na yan. Wala namang impeachable offense,” Marcos said.
Another neophyte senator, Bong Go, also said he will not be supporting any impeachment case against Duterte.
“Karapatan po nilang mag-file ng impeachment, kahit sinong Pilipino naman po karapatan ‘yun kung sa tingin niyo mayroong nilabag,” Go told reporters at the Quirino Grandstand Sunday.
Go, however, believes Duterte is only doing what is best for the country.
“Subalit alam niyo, nag-iisip po ‘yang ating pangulo. Isa po yang abogado, at alam ko po ang ginagawa ni
Pangulong Duterte ay kapakanan ng lahat bilang ama,” he said.
Critics said Duterte may be impeached for allowing China to fish in the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Last week, Duterte was asked whether his government would bar Chinese fishermen from Philippine waters after a Filipino boat sank in the Recto Bank after being hit by a Chinese vessel, abandoning the boat’s crew in the process last June 9.
“I don’t think China would do that. Why? Because we’re friends. They are of the same view that that should not result in any bloody confrontation,” Duterte said.
Duterte also said he agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2016 that Chinese fishermen may be granted access to the country’s EEZ in the West Philippine Sea to avoid encounter.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo later tried to explain what the President meant.
“He said they won’t allow it because as far as they are concerned, they have historical right to that area,” Panelo said.
“Second, we will allow it because we’re friends. Then let us meet halfway, that is the point of the President,” Panelo added.
