League Con 2019: Celebrating The Artists Behind the Heroes

Held in SM Megamall Fashion Hall from September 20-22, 2019, it was a free event for everyone to enjoy.

  • League Con is an event organized by DC Superheroes Cafe, in partnership with Ekonic, that aims to celebrate the love for comics
  • The event was held from September 20 until September 22, 2019, at the SM Megamall Fashion Hall Atrium
  • Talented comic book illustrators were also invited as guests in order to celebrate their work as well, as the artists behind the heroes

Manila, Philippines – Superheroes have been part of almost every person’s life, whether it is coming from TV shows or movies, or specially with comic books. Almost every superhero has their own story to tell, and comic books are the easiest to convey them, and behind each superhero, an artist is hard at work in bringing them to life.

DC Superheroes Cafe, in partnership with Ekonic, has held the first ever League Con 2019, on September 20, 21, and 22, at the SM Megamall Fashion Hall Atrium. The event is free so anyone could just drop by to enjoy the event.

League Con was held to celebrate both the love for comics and specially the artists that drew them. The event was also to commemorate Batman’s 80th anniversary, with the line, “Long Live the Bat.”

I was able to attend the event on Saturday, when most of the invited artists were present and there were a few activities on stage as well.

Some of the artists went on stage to give a free on-the-spot sketch, and all you needed to do was to just fall in line. Some of the artists that did that were Harvey Tolibao, Romulo Fajardo, Jr., and Carlo Pagulayan.

Harvey Tolibao also held a “How to Draw a Comic Book” workshop, where he showed his workflow in drawing comics, as well as answering a few questions. A panel was also held, with Miguel Mercado and Elmer Santos, which was then hosted by RJ Ledesma.

Being that the event was held by DC Superheroes Cafe, they have their own booth at the entrance, where you can then enjoy coffee and ice cream that came from their store. The cafe itself is located at the 4th floor of the Fashion Hall.

Of course, an event like this would not be complete without trying to bring home a few merchandise. Stalls were there that sold different kinds of products, ranging from comic books, Funko Pop, and figures from Kotobukiya. A small area was also set up showing off a few DC Comic Bishojo and Ikemen Series from Kotobukiya. The Bishojo and Ikemen Series are the figure company’s own take regarding famous characters, including comic book characters like Red Robin, Zatanna, among others.

An artists’ area was also set up, promoting the local artist scene, and you can directly buy their merchandise from the event as well.

League Con 2019 was a great event that introduced the people behind the heroes we admire. Congratulations to DC Superheroes Cafe for an awesome event, and we hope to get similar events from you in the future.
